T-MARC implemented the “Badilisha Tabia, Tokomeza Malaria” project in Simiyu and Shinyanga regions to promote malaria prevention, testing, and treatment. Funded by Comic Relief and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), the two-year project aimed to increase awareness and encourage positive health-seeking behaviors.
In 2020, DAMAX conducted an endline evaluation in the same districts of the two selected regions, Shinyanga and Simiyu, to measure the project's success. The evaluation focused on assessing the effectiveness of interventions, particularly the increase in demand and awareness among beneficiaries, behavioral change, and the impact of social behavior change communication strategies.
The endline survey, conducted in September 2020, involved 1,345 households, 589 target respondents, 6 community focus group discussions (FGDs), 21 health workers, 2 vector control personnel, and 8 Local Government Authority (LGA) staff across six districts. This survey followed baseline data collection from December 2018 and a midline survey in January 2020.
Key focus areas included evaluating knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment among beneficiaries and antenatal care (ANC) health workers. The survey also identified barriers to malaria prevention and treatment and assessed the use of biolarvicide in select districts, including the role, challenges, and acceptance of community health workers (CHWs) in malaria control. Data collection methods included semi-structured interviews, FGDs, and in-depth interviews (IDIs).
