In 2025, the Government of Tanzania, with support from UNICEF, conducted a nationwide mapping of Community Health Workers (CHWs) to improve the delivery of essential health services, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Covering 26 regions and 164 councils, the exercise identified 50,620 CHWs across the mainland. Notable regional differences emerged; Kagera led with 6,498 CHWs, while Katavi had the fewest at 684.

This strategic mapping will inform workforce planning, training, and resource allocation, helping to integrate CHWs more effectively into the national health system and accelerating progress toward universal health coverage.
