Community Health Workers (CHWs) play a vital role in delivering essential healthcare services in rural and underserved areas of Tanzania.
To enhance their effectiveness, the Tanzanian government, in collaboration with UNICEF, conducted a national CHW mapping in 2025.
This initiative aimed to assess their distribution, training, and scope of work, ensuring better integration into the healthcare system.
Covering 26 regions and 164 councils, the mapping exercise identified 50,620 CHWs across Tanzania Mainland, with significant regional variations.
Kagera had the highest number (6,498), while Katavi recorded the lowest (684).
The data gathered will guide workforce planning, resource allocation, and policy decisions to strengthen CHW support, ultimately advancing Tanzania’s goal of universal health coverage.
